Then it was time to turn back west and retrace our steps to Las Vegas.  Two long days of driving.  But we found a the North West New Mexico Visitor Center Grants, New Mexico, where the helpful Rangers advised us to take a scenic back road, State Route 53, to visit El Morro National Monument.  We were happy we stopped at the Visitor Center, once again being happy to pay taxes to support such a worthwhile service to citizens and visitors.  El Morro was another fascinating geologic formation that early explorers and visitors used to mark their visits-carved names from many centuries in the rock!

Then on to the Zuni Indian Pueblo, where Gloria gave us a walking tour of the Middle Pueblo and the historic mission church.  We didn't spring for the picture permit so no pictures, alas.

Our room was furnished with original handmade hickory furniture.  The "wigwam" was made of concrete and steel, alas.

Have you slept in a Wigwam?  Well, we are going to, tonight, at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona.   In addition to the lobby with its cozy wood-burning stove, checking internet, seems incongruous with the great 1950s cars parked in front of each of the teepee "rooms"  Our room was surprisingly spacious and well-furnished.  Here's a link to some historic information about the Wigwam Motel from the National Park Service Route 66 website.

We took the advice of the friendly desk clerk at the Wigwam and had dinner at Roma's Restaurant.   Margaritas $3.00.  What's not to like?  The friendly young server made it extra-special!   Our last taste of traditional New Mexican food.
